OCI Power, a solar inverter specialist led by CEO Seong-yeop Kim, signed a business agreement with IntechFA, an ESS solutions specialist, at the OCI Building in Sogong-dong, Seoul, on the 15th for the joint development of PCS dedicated to long-duration BESS.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop power conversion systems (PCS) specifically designed for long-duration BESS using LFP batteries in response to the recent expansion of renewable energy. They will also collaborate on prototype development, certification, and the establishment of mass-production systems.
Through this partnership, the companies plan to identify BESS business models in Korea and overseas and proactively respond to the new government’s renewable energy expansion policies and efforts to stabilize the power grid through 2030. In particular, the two companies will combine their capabilities across the entire process, from detailed PCS specification design and development to manufacturing, based on their domestic technologies and production facilities.
Seong-yeop Kim, CEO of OCI Power, said: “Long-duration BESS is an essential field for stabilizing the power grid and achieving the new government’s renewable energy expansion policies. Through this JDM (Joint Development Manufacturing) MOU, we will strengthen our PCS technology and manufacturing capabilities and secure grid stabilization technologies based on purely domestic technological and production capabilities. We will contribute to building safe and efficient energy storage systems.”
Long-duration Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are systems capable of storing and discharging energy for extended periods of six hours or more. They play a critical role in addressing the variability of renewable energy generation and operating the power grid efficiently.
The adoption of long-duration BESS is gaining attention as a strategic means of supporting renewable energy expansion while strengthening energy security and industrial competitiveness. Experts emphasize the importance of BESS in areas such as responding to peak electricity demand, optimizing transmission and distribution infrastructure, and securing emergency power supplies.
