OCI Power, which independently develops and manufactures solar power inverters in Korea, announced on the 27th that it had signed a contract to supply high-efficiency, large-scale inverters to the Imha Dam floating solar power plant in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province.
The Imha Dam floating solar power plant, located in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, is Korea’s largest floating solar facility installed on the surface of a multipurpose dam. In 2021, the site was designated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy as Korea’s first Renewable Energy Development Zone, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and K-water are carrying out the project with a total project cost of KRW 73.2 billion.
OCI Power plans to supply 47 MW of high-efficiency inverters to the Imha Dam floating solar power plant in December. The plant is expected to generate around 60,000 MWh annually, equivalent to the electricity used by approximately 15,000 households for one year. It is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 28,000 metric tons annually.
Floating solar power is a method of generating electricity by installing solar panels on floating structures and utilizing space on the surface of water. It has high deployment potential. In Korea, where securing large-scale sites is difficult due to limited land area and a shortage of developable flat land, floating solar power using water surfaces is attracting attention as an alternative.
Hyung-kyu Jang, CEO of OCI Power, said, “This project has once again provided an opportunity to demonstrate the technological capabilities and reliability of our inverters, which are based on domestic R&D and manufacturing. We are very pleased to supply OCI Power products to the Imha Dam floating solar power project, Korea’s first designated Renewable Energy Development Zone,” adding, “We will continue contributing to Korea’s energy transition and sustainable development through continuous technological development, production and service capabilities, and quality improvements.”
